Innovative Intervention at YGIA Polyclinic
Innovative percutaneous cardiac surgery was performed on August 6th at YGIA Polyclinic in collaboration with Cypriot and doctors from abroad.
Specifically, the operation was performed on a 58-year-old patient who had been suffering for years due to lung disease (pulmonary hypertension) and in whom he was diagnosed with a large intravaginal type of 2-hole perforation (heart hole) which was the cause of the problem.
The operation was performed by the percutaneous method, with access from a vein in the lower extremity, and with echocardiographic guidance, during which an occlusion device (umbrella) was placed which closed the heart hole without cardiac surgery and without the need to open the sternum.
The operation was performed by the following doctors:
- Dr. Magnus Settergren (specialist in congenital heart disease in adults), who performed the closure.
- Dr. Makridis Konstantinos (cardiologist) who had diagnosed the patient's problem and had undertaken the specialized echocardiographic guidance.
- Dr. Majid Kalani (invasive cardiologist and procedure coordinator).
- Dr. Konstantinos Cleanthous (anesthesiologist).
The patient left the Hospital the next day in excellent condition and with a final solution to the problem that had plagued her for years.
