Dr. Dimitrios Karakitsos is an internist/intensivist with twenty years of experience in the field of perioperative medicine and critical care. He is a graduate of Athens Medical School, and he has completed his PhD at the cardiology department of the University of Crete. He was trained in internal medicine and in critical care at several European health care institutions [King’s College hospital (United Kingdom), G. Gennimatas hospital (Greece), Foch hospital (France)] and in the United States (Stony Brook Univ. Hospital, NY), amongst others. Thereafter, he has served as an Associate Professor in medicine at the University of South Carolina, School of Medicine (Columbia, SC, US) and in critical care at the University of Southern California (LA, CA, US). Finally, he has worked as an ICU consultant and head of the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) program at the polyvalent critical care department of King Saud hospital (Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia), which is the largest intensive care unit (300 beds) in the middle east. His critical care expertise includes cardiac surgery/ECMO/ hemodynamic monitoring, trauma unit, infectious disease isolation units, and neurocritical care. Dr. Karakitsos is a well-known academic author of numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals (5000 citations, h-index: 38) and editor of many important sentinel international textbooks such as Critical Care Ultrasound (Elsevier, US) and Trauma Team Dynamics (Springer, US).
